Research has confirmed that the number the number of times one reads per day or per week, results in building what we call The Million Word Gap. The image shows how in a span of 5 years (from 0 to 5years of age) a child who has never been read to, would have possibly heard just over 4500 words, vis-à-vis a child who’s been read 5 times a day from birth, to hearing and learning over 14.5 lakh words. Even kids who are read only one book a day will hear about 290,000 more words by age 5 than those who don’t regularly read books with a parent or caregiver.
What makes this data further compelling is that a child’s age is no bar to reading. You can start reading to your child at as early as a New-Born. This ‘million word gap’ could be one key in explaining differences in vocabulary and reading development.
What may seem like a task at first, is the best gift you can give to your child: 20 minutes of reading time every day. Another brilliant research which shows that, how much time you spend reading directly impacts the performance of the child in academia.
Research shows that 20 minutes reading opens your child’s world to about 1.8 million words (18 lakh) a year compared to a 1 minute of reading per day that helps your child see just 8,000 words a year. That means that if they read 20 minutes a day, they will have read for 851 hours by 6th grade and on standardised tests, they will likely score better than 90% of their peers.
